The custom dates back to friends of the bride and groom decorating the wedding bed with flowers and ribbons.  Well-wishers would escort the couple to their marital bed, \u201cbedding\u201d the newly-weds.  It was said the crowd wouldn\u2019t leave until the new husband and wife has stripped off and were in bed together, symbolising the importance of procreation.
